How Starlink works
Starlink uses satellites in low orbit around the earth. You put a small dish outside where it can see the sky, plug it in, and connect to its Wi-Fi router. Starlink calls this plug and play. Professional installation is optional, at £74.
It uses a wireless signal instead of a cable to your home, so you don't need a phone line.
Starlink says its users typically get download speeds of 25 to 220Mbps, with most above 100Mbps, and upload speeds of 5 to 20Mbps. Latency on land is 25 to 50ms.
Starlink is sold on a rolling monthly plan with no minimum term. You can cancel at any time in your Starlink account, with no fee for leaving. If you rented the kit, you send it back within 30 days of cancelling, or Starlink charges you the kit's full price.

Delivery is £19 on every plan. Residential kits are rented, so you send them back if you cancel. The Roam Mini Kit is yours to keep.
Starlink says Residential 100 Mbps and 200 Mbps are only available in some areas. Residential Max was offered at the address we checked, along with both of those. On the UK Roam order screen, the only kit offered was the Mini Kit.
Starlink prices aren't part of our typical broadband prices, which cover fixed-line broadband only.

Who Starlink may suit
- Homes in rural areas where wired broadband is slow or not available. Ofcom suggests looking at satellite if you can't get a decent fibre or cable connection.
- Homes with no phone line, as Starlink doesn't need one.
- People who move often or don't know how long they'll stay, as there's no minimum term.

Who Starlink may not suit
Flats and high-rise buildings
Starlink needs a clear view of the sky. Trees, poles or a roof in the way can cause drop-outs. Starlink advises against fitting the dish next to a wall or under a covered area, and suggests a raised spot such as a post or rooftop.
In a flat there may be nowhere the dish can see enough of the sky. The Starlink app has a Check for Obstructions tool you can use before you install.

Homes without a clear view of the sky
Starlink says even small obstructions can cause drop-outs and slower speeds, so tall trees or buildings close by can be a problem wherever you live.

If you want a price that can't change
Starlink can change its plans and prices. For changes that are worse for you, it must email you at least 30 days before, and you can cancel.

Starlink Roam for caravans and portable use
Roam is Starlink's plan for using it away from home: in a caravan, motorhome, on a boat on inland or coastal waters, or camping. Roam 100GB gives 100GB of high-speed data a month, then unlimited data at low speed. Roam Unlimited has no high-speed data limit. Billing is monthly, and you can pause with Standby mode for a small monthly fee.
Roam costs £55 a month for 100GB or £100 a month for unlimited data. The Mini Kit costs £179, plus £19 delivery, and is small enough to fit in a rucksack.

Starlink, full fibre or 5G home broadband?
Ofcom says that if you can't get a decent fibre or cable connection, you could look at 5G mobile broadband or satellite. These use a wireless signal instead of a cable to your home, so speeds and reliability can change depending on where you live.
EE, part of BT Group, says it will also sell satellite broadband using Starlink's technology, starting with pilot installations later in 2026.

Full fibre runs fibre-optic cable all the way to your home, and usually gives faster and more reliable speeds. Read more in what is full fibre broadband?
| Type | How it connects | What it needs |
|---|---|---|
| Satellite, such as Starlink | A dish outside, linked to satellites | A clear view of the sky |
| Full fibre | Fibre-optic cable all the way to your home | Full fibre at your address |
| 5G home broadband | A wireless signal from a mobile network | A good 5G signal where you live |
