Faster speeds usually cost more, but not always: this month, 80 to 500Mb deals were typically no dearer than slower ones. The speed you need depends on how many people use the connection and what they use it for.
Ofcom says browsing and music streaming need about 1Mbit/s, an HD video call about 10Mbit/s, and one person streaming 4K about 30Mbit/s. For several people streaming 4K at once, it suggests about 300Mbit/s.

What changes the price
Contract length
A shorter or rolling contract gives you more freedom to leave.
Most big providers sell broadband on 24-month contracts. Some also offer 12-month deals. Prices rise by a fixed amount each spring (usually 31 March or 1 April) during the contract, and the price usually changes when the contract ends.

Set-up fee
Some deals charge a set-up fee and some do not. Count it in the total cost over the contract, not only the monthly price.

Full fibre is available to 24.9 million UK homes, 82% of all homes.

What is full fibre broadband, and how to check if you can get it
If you can't get a decent fibre or cable connection, Ofcom suggests looking at 5G or satellite broadband. These use a wireless signal instead of a cable. Satellite prices are not part of our typical prices above.

How to switch
Contact the provider you want to move to. Through One Touch Switch, they manage the switch for you, including telling your old provider. Check when your contract ends first, as you may have to pay an early termination charge if you leave before then. Any loss of service should last no more than one working day.
